5 Key Components of a GST-Compliant Invoice in India

Generating invoices is a daily necessity for any small business or freelancer. However, if you are registered under GST, your invoices must follow the strict guidelines laid down by the GST Council.

Here are the five essential components that make an invoice GST-compliant:

1. Invoice Numbering & Dates Your invoice must have a unique, sequential serial number containing only alphabets, numerals, or special characters (like hyphens and slashes), and must not exceed 16 characters. It must also clearly show the date of issue.

2. GSTIN and Billing Details of Both Parties Both your GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) and your client's GSTIN must be displayed. If your client is unregistered, you must still list their Billing Address.

3. HSN/SAC Codes Each item row in the invoice must carry the correct HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) code for goods, or SAC (Services Accounting Code) for professional services (e.g. 998313 for software development consulting).

4. Split Tax Breakdown (CGST, SGST, IGST) You must split the tax based on the type of trade: - **Intra-state (same state)**: Split the tax into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) equally. - **Inter-state (different states)**: Charge the full tax rate under IGST (Integrated GST).

5. Authorized Signature A GST-compliant invoice is only valid if it bears the signature or digital signature of the supplier.
