Issuing GST-compliant invoices is legally required for registered businesses and freelancers in India. A valid tax invoice ensures proper documentation for tax filing purposes and allows your corporate clients to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on the taxes they pay you.
CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) apply to intra-state supply (when you and client are in the same state) and are split 50/50. IGST (Integrated GST) applies to inter-state supply and is charged as the full tax rate (e.g. 18%).
Export of services is treated as zero-rated supply. If your total annual receipts are under ₹20 Lakhs, registration is optional. However, if you are registered, you can file a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) on the GST portal to bill at 0% GST.
A compliant GST tax invoice must include: unique sequential invoice number, date of issue, supplier name/address/GSTIN, recipient name/address/GSTIN (for B2B), SAC/HSN code, description of services/goods, taxable value, applicable GST tax rates, and total amount.
If you issue an incorrect invoice that is already uploaded to the GST portal or sent to a client, you cannot delete it. You must issue a Credit Note (to reduce value) or Debit Note (to increase value) referencing the original invoice number.
